Additional Information

A George BRIER was a witness at the marriage of Ruth & John; could he have been John's brother? Almost certainly yes, judging by the information on George's marriage certificate. The family can be seen in the 1841 Census.
Tragedy struck the family in 1847. They had only lately moved to Wakefield - presumably better work for stonemasons was on offer - and a new baby, Ruth, had arrived. But Ruth only lived 3 weeks, and the family took her back to be buried in Kirkheaton in June. Then, John, only 40 years old, died and again the family brought him back to be buried in the same grave as George's wife Harriet, in Kirkheaton Churchyard. Ruth and the remains of the family returned to Kirkheaton, and in the 1851 Census Ruth is working as a Grocer in St Mary's Lane Kirkheaton, with only the two youngest children at home. By the time of the 1861 Census, Ruth was nowhere to be found. She died in 1872, and is buried in the same grave as John and George's wife Harriet.
