Additional Information

The first conclusive proof that George is indeed related to John BRIER came with his marriage certificate in 1848, which stated that his father was "Thomas BRIER, Farmer & Mason". For some reason, George's baptism was not recorded in the Kirkheaton Parish Registers - perhaps Thomas & Mary forgot to baptise him, or perhaps the Parish Clerk forgot to record the baptism. Either way, we can only speculate, from census and marriage certificate information, that he was born around 1806.

In the 1841 Census George and Harriet lived at Hill Side, Kirkheaton. By the time of the 1851 Census, George was living at Eagles Grove with new wife Jane and new child Benjamin, but most of his other unmarried children were still living at Hill Side. In 1861, those children of his first marriage still unmarried were back living with George and Jane at Eagles Grove.

Harriet shares her grave in Kirkheaton Churchyard with John & Ruth, two of her infant children (not named) as noted on her memorial stone:

. . . but no sign of George?! And why are John and Ruth BRIER buried with Harriet? If George and John are closely related, it would be understandable, but so far I have found no son of Thomas called George. Perhaps they were very close cousins? There are two possible candidates for this George: one was born to Joseph and Mary in 1804 in Kirkheaton, and the other was born to John and Fanny in 1808 in Almondbury. In the 1851 and 1861 censuses, George stated he was born in Kirkheaton, and his age gives a birth year closer to 1804 than 1808, so perhaps he was the son of Joseph.
