William stated that he was a Marine, at the time he married in 1858; he stated that his father, David, was a Veterinary Surgeon! Presumably, being far from home, he assumed that no-one would or could verify this untruth! Elizabeth's father was given as Charles POPE, Musician.
By the time of the 1881 Census, they were living at the George Street Workmens Club and Institute in Chatham, and William was described as a Pensioner of the Royal Marines.
