Additional Information

On 31 Dec 1881 at Baughurst, George married Caroline DYER, 22 years old to his 36, and he married as George RAMPTON, even though he had told the census enumerator, not 8 months previously, that his name was SMITH! His aunt and uncle, Rachel and George DAY, were witnesses, and the father's name was given as David SMITH. Caroline was the daughter of Francis Dyer and was living at Kingsclere Woodlands at the time of the marriage. They had a daughter, Mary RAMPTON, baptised privately on 20 May 1883 (recorded at Ramsdell although the family lived at West Heath at the time). The need for the private baptism is realised when you see that Caroline died on the same day as the baptism of Mary, of Convulsive Fit after Confinement. Mary died on 7 Jul 1886 aged 3, of Natural Causes. An inquest was held on 9 Jul 1886 and the certificate was issued by the Coroner for Hampshire, Spencer Clarke.

When George remarried late in life, in 1914, he was a widower, and again he married under the name Rampton. In the space for groom's father was the name of David Smith, deceased. His bride on this occasion was Lucy Ann HARMSWORTH, a 52 year old spinster (George was himself 68 at the time).
