Additional Information

Anthony married Caroline CULLUM on 3 Mar 1851 at Monk Sherborne. Anthony was described in the Marriage Register as a bachelor, of full age, and a Carpenter. Caroline, a spinster of Monk Sherborne, was the daughter of Charles, a thatcher, and is also described as being of full age on the marriage certificate. The witnesses were Rachel Owen and John Owen. Caroline had been baptised on 18 Jan 1829 at MS, the daughter of Charles and Mary Ann Cullum. Despite the fact that they were in MS in early March 1851, they do not feature in the 1851 census. Perhaps they left for America immediately after their marriage. The next we hear of them is in 1854, when they arrived in Iowa.

This is some information provided by Mr. Clare RAMPTON of Cedar Falls Iowa (via Lynnette McMahon) on Anthony RAMPTON and his brother Edmund RAMPTON:

In 1854 Anthony came to Monroe Township, Benton County, Iowa, settling on the SE 1/4 of section 8, which was virgin prairie. The first known settlers in the township were the Jonathan Urmy's, who came from Indiana and settled in Yankee Grove, section 15, in 1853. When there was need for a burial ground, Anthony RAMPTON donated a piece of land on the NE corner of his quarter section to the community, later deeding it to Benton County for a cemetery. It has been maintained ever since and is known as the Rampton Cemetery. It is here that the members of the first two generation of the family are interred. The Edmund RAMPTON family lived on land just across the road to the east from the Anthony RAMPTON farm, SW 1/4 of section 9, and here in later years their son Frank and wife Viola raised their family. The Charles Henry RAMPTONs lived two miles north on section 33 of Bruce Township, Benton County, where their family was born and raised prior to their moving to Pomona, California. In later years Fred and Minne Rampton lived and farmed this land for several years. Benton County land deeds show Anthony Rampton (2nd) selling the original homestead quarter section to his daughter and son-in-law (Hetty and George Boyd) in 1882. Edmund RAMPTON and wife Mary Jane sold in 1883 their quarter section of land to their son Frank Warren RAMPTON. An atlas and plat of Benton County dated 1901 shows 320 acres in the name of Frank W. RAMPTON (SW 1/4 and W1/2 of SE 1/4, section 9, and N1/2 of NW 1/4 of section 16). This land was sold to George Herman and John Frederick Milne in March 1907, and is believed to still remain in the Milne Family.

From additional information supplied by Clare Rampton, it looks as though Anthony's wife Caroline died soon after arriving in America, and Anthony subsequently married twice more. The Benton County, Iowa, Register of Marriages (no. 1) records the marriage of:
Mary E. RAMPTON of Dysart, 20yrs old, white, born in Iowa to Anthony Rampton and Phoebe VanWinkle. This is her first marriage. Married in Vinton Iowa 21 Oct 1891 to John Henry HOOPLE; witnessed by David Milne.
Mary E and John Henry had six children: Warren Allen, Clifford Anthony, Anna, Phoebe, Maude May, and John Henry III (who died in infancy).
The 1880 US Census shows Anthony a widower, with daughters Hester, Annie, Mary E. and Phoebe living at home.
