Additional Information

In the 1881 Census, just before Solomon was married, his bride-to-be was listed as Fanny Hartigan, Widow of Private 101st Regiment, and had with her a son, Wyndham Hartigan, aged 3. Solomon himself does not appear anywhere in the 1881 Census, although there is a soldier called Solomon GRIBBER listed as living at the New Barracks, Alverstoke, of the correct age, and having been born in Whitchurch. I have been unable to find a baptism for a Solomon GRIBBER in Whitchurch at the right time, nor can I find any occurrence of the name GRIBBER in Hampshire either in the 1851 census or the 1881 Census. I suspect, therefore, that this is the correct Solomon, who either signed up under an assumed name, or the enumerator recorded the wrong name, or the transcriber of the 1881 index spectacularly misread the name!

Son Thomas was described as a House Decorator, Albert as a Factory Worker, and Harry as a Rubber Factory Worker, in the 1901 census, when the family was living in West Ham, Essex.
