Additional Information

I was curious about this family, as few RAMPTONs strayed into Surrey, despite its proximity to Hampshire, and James's origins were not at all clear. However, by piecing together the information available in the Surrey Marriage Index, the Marriage Allegations for the Commissary Court of Surrey, and parish registers, I think I have been able to discover some of James's history.

He was, I believe, the James born to John and Elizabeth RAMPTON in Tadley in 1704 - no other information about him, either in Tadley or surrounding parishes had come to light, and he had up until now been a complete mystery. I began with the James Rampton who married Ann FARR in Farnham 6 Sep 1730 (IGI), however the Surrey Marriage Index entry for this marriage says that the groom was "of Basing", which caused me to wonder. Ann died in 1734 and James subsequently married Mary LOVELAND 18 May 1735 at Farnham by licence (he said he was a bachelor, but I don't think so!), and the Surrey Marriage Index entry says that both were of Farnham (and Mary was 27 so why did they need a licence?). Luckily the Marriage Allegation gives James's age as 30 - this puts his year of birth as 1705. There were no Basing or Basingstoke baptisms between 1679 and 1802 and so I conclude that he must have left home in Tadley, initially moving to Basingstoke/Basing to find work, and then eastwards to Farnham, twelve miles away. There is another connection with Basingstoke - James elder brother John was married there in 1715, although he subsequently moved back to Tadley - perhaps James followed him there and then stayed.
