This section examines the families of RAMPTON living in the City of London and Middlesex, both metropolitan and rural. The earliest record I have is the marriage between Margett RAMTON and William KETTLE at St Mary Le Bow on 18 Jan 1548, indexed in the IGI. The Harleian Society recorded the marriage between Joane RAMPHEM [?] and Jefferie JOHNSON 15 Apr 1621 at St Peter's Cornhill. The IGI again gives us the marriage between Henry RAMPTON and Anne WRIGHT 17 Jul 1649 at St Peter Pauls Wharf. This may be the same Henry who married Frances DENNIS 19 Nov 1655 at St Paul Covent Garden Westminster, but I have no record as yet of his origins.

John Simmons RAMPTON was a Mercantile Clerk, and lived for a large part of his life in Bellchambers Passage, Red Cross Street, close to St Bartholomews and the Smithfield area of the City of London. He had a large family, mainly female, and appears to have been a Methodist, as his children's births were entered into Dr Williams Registry.

There were a number of families living in Metropolitan Middlesex during the 19th Century; most of them upon examination can be shown to originate in the Home Counties or even beyond. George RAMPTON came to London from Hampshire (exact place unknown but probably Basingstoke). He married in Southwark, but then moved north of the River Thames to Holborn, where he died in 1853.

William RAMPTON's origins are at present a mystery. He married in Westminster and his two sons were baptised in Marylebone. He needs further investigation.
