Additional Information

In the 1841 Census, the family was living at James Street, St Pancras [the surname looks a lot like RUMPTER]. The whole family stated that they were born in the same county, but this does not appear to be true. In 1851, Goorge gave his birthplace as Hampshire and this creates a conundrum. Hampshire is full of RAMPTONs, and quite few of them were called George, but I have the record of only one George born in Hampshire between 1801 (in Medstead) and 1815 (in Worting). This was George baptised 1810 in Basingstoke, the son of Richard RAMPTON and Ann GODWIN. The 1801 and 1815 George's can be accounted for subsequently in Hampshire, but George born to Richard and Ann cannot. I think he is a good candidate, but cannot prove it categorically.

Sarah LEAVER married Joseph BEARD on 9 May 1824. She was a minor, and so the marriage was with her father Robert LEAVER's consent. The marriage took place by licence in Bermondsey, Sarah being resident in Christchurch Middlesex. There seem to have been two children of this marriage, Joseph and William, although William called himself William RAMPTON in the 1851 census.

Of the children born to George and Sarah, the only record I have of Eliza is of her baptism, since it took place on the same day as that of James. They may have been twins, but James's age in 1851 (and in 1841) suggests that he was born in 1839, so perhaps they were just saving up and having all their children baptised at once! In 1851 the family was living at 12 Little Ormond Street, St George the Martyr, Holborn. George died two years later in the Union Workhouse Gray's Inn Lane, of Inflammation of the Lungs. He was 45 years old.

Son George may be the George found in the 1901 census working as an Organist Piano Tuner in Nailsworth Stroud Gloucestershire.
