The Ramptons in Ramsdell

The Evidence
The parish of Ramsdell was formed in 1868 from parts of the surrounding parishes of Monk Sherborne, Tadley and Wootton St Lawrence, and it is therefore not surprising that there are few records of Ramptons there. It is noted in a number of entries for Rampton events that the place of residence is given as Ramsdell, as well as West Heath.

The only Rampton baptism which is recorded as having taken place at Ramsdell was that of Mary daughter of George Rampton and Caroline (nee DYER) on 20 May 1883. George and Caroline were living at West Heath at the time, and George is, of course, a member of the Monk Sherborne family , the son of Dinah Rampton who later became Dinah SMITH. Mary's baptism was private, presumably as she was not expected to live, and just to make sure she was baptised at Baughurst also on the same day! Caroline appears to have died in 1883, and could well have been buried in Ramsdell, but the burial registers have not yet been deposited and so I am unable to check.
