Additional Information
In the 1871 census return, Edwin was found living with his parents in Basingstoke and in 1881 he was still with them, this time in Mattingley. In 1891, Dorcas Parris was a cook, living in Basing Workhouse with her two sons, Alfred James Parris (aged 9) and William Parris (aged 1), both of whom had been born in Basing Union. When they married in 1893, Edwin gave his address as Reading Road Basingstoke, and Dorcas gave hers as Elbow Corner, Basingstoke. In 1894, their address was 3 Elbow Cottage Basingstoke. In 1901, Dorcas Rampton was found living in Dummer, described as the Wife of a Soldier, with Edwin Ernest (given as Edwin in the census return) and William RAMPTON (born circa 1890 in Basing) - this William looks very like the one-year-old she had had with her in 1891 in Basing Union - perhaps Edwin RAMPTON had been his father after all and she had renamed him once they were married. In 1901, Edwin was serving as a Private in the Army and was stationed in Portsmouth.
