Introduction
This section examines the families of RAMPTON living in the area covered by the modern-day Registration District of Alton. The parishes in this section of the One-Name Study are:

Bramshott Chawton Coldrey East Tisted
East Worldham Farringdon Froyle Hartley Mauditt

The area is bordered on the North by Hartley Wintney, on the East by Surrey, on the West by Basingstoke and Alresford, and on the South by Petersfield.

Alton
Two churches serve the parish of Alton, St Lawrence, with records from 1615, and All Saints with records from 1875.

Bentley Liberty
The church of St Mary serves the parish of Bentley, parish records having been available since 1538. Although not a source of an indigenous Rampton population, Bentley did see at least one family living there in the mid 19th century. The first baptism took place in 1862 to Daniel & Ann, who had originated in Froyle, and the family continued to live there until at least 1901.

Bentworth
The church of St Mary serves the parish of Bentworth, parish records having been available since 1599. I have not identified any Rampton events in this parish.

Binstead
The church of Holy Cross serves the parish of Binstead, parish records having been available since 1653. Binstead has seen random Rampton events since 1782 - a baptism or a marriage - but none of the events indicates an indigenous Rampton population. Perhaps the parish is too close to Froyle or Alton, since it is those families which chose to baptise their children in Binstead. For instance, Thomas and Elizabeth from Froyle chose Binstead for three of their children. Ann Rampton married William KITCHENER in Binstead in 1808; William Rampton of Froyle married Hannah GOODCHILD of Binstead there in 1816; and William Rampton married Sarah BALCHIN there in 1834. None of these couples stayed in Binstead, however, and by 1891 only the families of William & Emily and John & Ellen remained in the village. In 1901, William and Emily were still in the village, and had been joined by Elizabeth with children Stella and Martin (this family not yet identified although Martin may have emigrated to USA in 1919), by Sidney (son of William and Eily) and Louisa, and by Charles and Alice. John was also still living in the village.
