RAMPTONs of Alresford and Surrounding Parishes

Introduction
This section examines the families of RAMPTON living in the area covered by the modern-day Registration District of Alresford. The parishes in this section of the One-Name Study are:
Beauworth Bighton Bishop's Sutton Bramdean Brown Candover
Cheriton Chilton Candover Godsfield Hinton Ampner Itchen Stoke
Kilmeston New Alresford Northington Old Alresford Ovington
Ropley Swarraton Tichborne West Tisted
The area is bordered on the North by Basingstoke, on the East by Alton, on the West by Winchester, and on the South by Petersfield and Droxford.

Beauworth
The church of St James serves the parish of Beauworth. until 1879, this was a part of the Chapelry of Cheriton, becoming a full parish in its own right in that year. Records exist from 1841. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

Bighton
The church of All Saints serves the parish of Bighton, parish records having been available since 1573. Margaret Russell tells me that Frederick RAMPTON married Ellen ADAMS on 8 June 1904 at Bighton. Frederick was the son of William and Sarah of Bishop's Sutton. There appears to have been no other Rampton family in the parish.

Bishop's Sutton
The church of St Nicholas serves the parish of Bishop's Sutton, parish records having been available since 1711. The earliest RAMPTON event in the parish was the marriage of Alfred RAMPTON to Eliza VIDLER in 1851. Although Alfred was a member of the Herriard branch, he settled down in Bishop's Sutton after his marriage and had a large number of children. Eliza was still living in the parish in 1901. Alfred's brother William also married in Bishop's Sutton (to Sarah BUDD in 1861), and also had a large family. A third family, that of Richard and Emilia RAMPTON also made their home in Bishop's Sutton. Richard was a cousin of William and Alfred. The only Bishop's Sutton events, therefore, all relate to incomers, and it can be concluded that there was no indigenous RAMPTON family in the parish.

Bramdean
The church of St Simon and St Jude serves the parish of Bramdean, parish records having been available since 1573. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

Brown Candover
The church of St Peter serves the parish of Brown Candover. Parish records have been available since 1611. I only have one event recorded in Brown Candover, the fact that Sarah RAMPTON, of the Herriard family, was living in the parish at the time of the 1851 Census. She was the daughter of Richard Rampton the blacksmith.

Cheriton
The church of St Michael and All Angels serves the parish of Cheriton. Parish records have been available since 1557. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

Chilton Candover
The church of St Nicholas serves the parish of Chilton Candover. Parish records have been available since 1672. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

Godsfield Extra-Parochial
Godsfield does not appear to have a church. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

Hinton Ampner
The church of All Saints serves the parish of Hinton Ampner. Parish records have been available since 1561. The only RAMPTON event recorded in this parish is the baptism of James son of George and Dinah in 1848. George was a member of the Herriard branch of the family. They had a number of children, but James was the only one to have been born/baptised in Hinton Ampner; they were just passing through.

Itchen Stoke
The church of St Mary the Virgin serves the parish of Itchen Stoke. Parish records have been available since 1719. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

Kilmeston
The church of the St Andrew serves the parish of Kilmeston. Parish records have been available since 1661. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

New Alresford
The church of St John the Baptist serves the parish of New Alresford. Parish records have been available since 1714. Charles and Elizabeth RAMPTON were living in the parish at the time of the 1851 Census, and both claimed to have been born in Alresford. However, I have been unable, as yet, to tie them to any one family. There were a number of Charles RAMPTONs born around 1830 which could be him, but none of them was married to a lady called Elizabeth or Eliza as early as 1851. Only one of the possible candidates was born in Alresford and he did not marry until 3 years later, in London. All other records that I have been able to identify are Monumental Inscriptions between the years 1855 and 1882. All of the deceased were members of the Herriard branch of the family.

Northington
The church of St John the Evangelist serves the parish of Northington. Parish records have been available since 1579. In 1891, it was the home to Jesse and Mary RAMPTON. Jesse was a member of the Whitchurch family. There are no other RAMPTON records for this parish.

Old Alresford
The church of St Mary serves the parish of Old Alresford. Parish records have been available since 1556. I have identified over 200 RAMPTON events for Old Alresford, and nearly all relate to Herriard and Whitchurch families. The earliest record, from 1822, is the baptism of Anne Maria daughter of George RAMPTON and Jane BIGGS (possibly illegitimate - the couple do not appear to have married and there are no other children recorded for them in Alresford). In the same year, the baptism took place of Sarah, daughter of William and Frances (possibly nee NORGET). William was the village blacksmith and a member of the Herriard family, and one of his sons was Henry, one of the Mormon pioneers to Utah.

There are certainly a large number of events related to the parish, but since they start in 1822, the parish records begin in 1556, and most if not all events can be traced back to the Herriard family, I think it is safe to say that RAMPTON was not indigenous to this parish.

Ovington
The church of St Peter serves the parish of Ovington. Parish records have been available since 1591. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

Ropley
The church of St Peter serves the parish of Ropley. Parish records have been available since 1539. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

Swarraton
The church of St Andrew serves the parish of Swarraton. Parish records have been available since 1539. The church was demolished in 1851 and the churchyard closed in 1886. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

Tichborne
The church of St Andrew serves the parish of Tichborne. Parish records have been available since 1667, although the early years are incomplete. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.

West Tisted
The church of St Mary Magdalen serves the parish of West Tisted. Parish records have been available since 1560. I have been unable to identify any RAMPTON events in this parish.
