Where They Lived

When James married Susannah Powell in 1864, he was a 29-year old bachelor, living at 1 Alexandra Terrace Greenwich. His father is given as Floor Cloth Manufacturer. Susannah's father was Phillip Powell, a Waterman. She was 26 and a spinster. When Susannah died 10 years later of Phthisis (consumption), they were living at 5 Bridge Street Greenwich.

At the time of his second marriage, in 1875, James was living at 5 Alexander Terrace, Bridge Street Greenwich (presumably he had not moved since his first wife died), and his bride at 39 Blissett Street Greenwich. Henry was still not given as deceased (and was still a Floor Cloth Manufacturer).

In 1881 the couple lived at 4 Trinity Grove, Greenwich. James said he was born in Westminster, and Ann Elizabeth (or Elizabeth as she is shown in the census return) in Greenwich circa 1835.

At the time of the 1891 Census, James and ELizabeth were both inmates of the Union Workhouse, and when James died aged 61, also of Phthisis, he was still living in the Union Workhouse Greenwich; the informant was the Workhouse Master not his wife Anne Elizabeth.
