Additional Information

At the time he married, John was described as a Farmer, living in Nine Elms, but he seems to have switched careers soon afterwards and joined other members of his family working on the railways.

In 1849, they were living in Cavendish Terrace; by the time of the 1851 Census, they had moved to 3 Spring Garden Place, Lambeth, but without young George, who was living with his maternal grandparents, William and Hannah Owen, in Farleigh Wallop, HAM. In 1853, when the first Mary Ann was baptised, they were living at 17 Horace Street, Kennington.

In 1855, the family was living in New Wellington Terrace, Wandsworth Road, Lambeth, and in the 1871 Census they were living at 5 Brooklands Road, Lambeth. In 1860, however, at the time of Mary Ann's death from Chorea, Abscess of Axilla, the family lived at 3 Elizabeth Street, Wandsworth Road.

In 1871, Alfred was described as being in the Navy, John was still living at home and was a messenger, and two daughters, Anne and Mary Ann were also at home, along with nephew William SHELLAM. William was the son of James Henry SHELLAM, a Police Sergeant, and Mary Martha RAMPTON, daughter of Edward RAMPTON and sister of John.

In the 1881 Census John and Rachael were living at 9 Brooklands Road, Lambeth, with children John and Mary Ann still at home. In fact, they were still there in 1887, as Mary Ann gave the same address at the time of her marriage.
