Where They Lived

William was obviously a man of some substance. He was described as a Maltster, an Auctioneer (both in Pigot's Directory of Suffolk 1823-4) and (on his death certificate) a Gentleman. His Will of 1847 details stocks and shares to be distributed amongst his children, loans he has made, and mentions some of the household goods he owned, such as paintings and books, which were fairly rare at the time. He was careful, in his will, to ensure that any money that he left to his daughters was for their sole use, and could be left to their children, but was not to be touched by their husbands. One daughter, Elizabeth or Eliza, was specifically left out of the will, since William says that he had lent various sums of money to her late husband Henry BAKER (and presumably had not been paid back by him!). John was named as one of the executors, and inherited half of the residuary estate.
